Description
Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) is an evidence-informed recovery program. SMART Recovery supports people with substance dependencies to:
1. Build and maintain motivation
2. Cope with urges and cravings
3. Manage thoughts, feelings and behaviors
4. Live a balanced life
Individuals attend SMART Recovery meetings to get support for addiction to all types of problematic behaviors including drugs, alcohol, gambling, cigarettes, food, and more. SMART Recovery meetings are free and are guided by trained facilitators. Most meetings last around 90 minutes, and meetings are available in-person or online.
SMART Recovery has 5 Principles:
1. Self-Management: People can manage their own behaviors
2. Mutual Support: There is great value in connecting with and learning from peers with similar experience
3. Choice: People choose their own goals, skills, and tools
4. Evidence Led: All SMART programs are based on scientific evidence and there is encouragement of ongoing evaluation
5. Person Centered: People with lived experience are central in guiding what we do
SMART Recovery was established in 1994 in the United States. There are now more than 1,500 meetings in North America and there are meetings worldwide in more than 23 countries.
