Why Is This Important?
Mental health and substance use or misuse concerns have been identified by the community throughout the CHA and CHIP process. These issues may occur together as individuals sometimes use substances as a coping mechanism for mental health concerns. Throughout the CHA and CHIP process, the participants shared concerns related to mental health and substance use or misuse. Mental health and substance use or misuse concerns are also stigmatized issues, particularly in historically marginalized or “othered” population groups, including but not limited to people who identify as lower income, rural, African American or black, Latino/a/x, immigrant populations, and LGBTQ. Personal comfort, accessibility (including cost), and availability of services are also important considerations when thinking about mental health and substance related concerns.
