Description
The Aging Population Subgroup was a planning group within Live Well Wake's Access to Health Care priority area. The group held its first meeting on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023, and its last meeting on Monday, August 19th, 2024. The group met monthly to discuss important issues relevant to aging adults and to identify ways to increase access to healthcare for this population in Wake County.
Progress in 2023
On Tuesday, March 28th, 2023, the group convened for its first meeting. During the initial meeting, the group defined "aging population" and "aging in place". The group discussed what were the SDOH for aging seniors, what are agencies that work with seniors, and who else the group should bring to the table for these discussions. Throughout 2023, the group worked on aligning subgroup goals with the goals of the WCHHS Board. The group chose to focus on strategies tailored towards individuals 50 - 64, to increase access to healthcare among adults before retirement age so that they are already connected with a primary provider. The group suggested partnering with organizations to increase enrollment in Medicaid and SNAP for adults. In addition, the group ended the year pitching ideas to improve adults' ability to age in place.
Progress in 2024
In 2024, Wake County Health and Human Services (WCHHS) launched a series of strategic planning workgroups to lead strategy and implementation around key areas of interest from the WCHHS leadership. One of those strategic planning workgroups that launched was the Commission on Aging that worked on addressing aging adult issues. This group was formed from select individuals within WCHHS and the WCHHS Board. This group has taken up the work of Live Well Wake's Aging Population subgroup and works on advocating and promoting access to care for aging adults across Wake County. Before the transition, Live Well Wake's Aging Population subgroup was able to provide ideas and strategies for WCHHS to improve access to healthcare for aging adults. These strategies were shared out with WCHHS leadership and will be integrated into WCHHS programming moving.
