Strategy
Mission Statement
To combat the growing crisis of substance abuse and addiction in Sampson County and provide hope for families affected by substance abuse issues, the Sampson County Substance Abuse Coalition will work with community partners focusing on three strategic initiatives (1) Intervention, (2) Public Awareness (Prevention), and (3) Training.
Description
The Sampson County Substance Abuse Coalition (formerly the "Meth" Task Force) is a 501(c)(3) organization that formed in 2004. The coalition meets regularly and has provided educational information and resources at various community events (Bi-annual Medication Take-Back events, Clinton Square Fair, National Night Out) and by media campaigns including brochures, flyers, newspapers, websites, social media, and local radio.
In May 2023, Community Impact NC and Eastpointe collaborated to purchase the following items exclusively for the coalition to disperse throughout the county and to partners: Narcan kits, fentanyl test strips, medicine lock boxes, and Deterra RX disposal bags.
In November 2023, Sampson County Health Department (SCHD) was awarded grant funding in the amount of $60,000 from Eastpointe LME/MCO. The funding was to support counties working on initiatives to address opioid use and/or to provide whole person integrated care. After Eastpointe consolidated with Trillium Health Resources in February 2024, the original contract was amended and grant funds were extended until December 2024.
In August 2024, SCHD was awarded additional one-time funding for $15,000 from Trillium Health Resources.
These funds have been incredibly important for the Sampson County Substance Abuse Coalition and Sampson County Health Department to actively address opioid use in Sampson County through:
- Coalition building
- Increased community education on opioid overdose prevention, signs of opioid overdose, how to get Narcan and how to give Narcan
- Providing Narcan to individuals, family, friends, and/or community members
