Description
Project Virtual-Based Opioid Treatment (VBOT) in North Carolina is a program developed by the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation. The Foundation’s overall mission is to improve and increase access to care for those facing opioid addiction. Through VBOT, patients can get connected to a "care team" that can assist them in getting on a path to recovery. This includes access to a physician who can prescribe medicated assisted treatement (MAT) as well as referrals to other recovery resources and support services. VBOT patient visits can be completed virtually through a smartphone or computer, making it easier and more convenient for patients to participate.
We serve Moore County residents struggling with opioid addiction.
Opioid Addiction is a treatable disease but it requires significant care coordination and collaboration among providers and care resources. Providers given proper training and surrounded by professionals to share in their patients' treatment strategies can successfully treat those suffering from Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
Progress in 2023
Providers affiliated with FirstHealth of the Carolinas began utilizing the VBOT platform as an option for patients. In most instances, VBOT was used in conjunction with outpatient and medication assisted treatment programming. Many patients expressed appreciation for the added convenience that virtual sessions provided. This encouraged greater continual adherence to regimes of treatment.
Progress in 2024
The VBOT care team was enhanced with the addition of peer support specialists working through the Sandhills Opioid Response consortium. Peer support specialists are individuals with lived experience of substance use disorders who provide support and guidance to others facing similar challenges, often focusing on recovery and empowerment.
