TAME Program

Description

Teenage Alcohol Marijuana Education (TAME) started in 2019. It provides factual, evidence-based education about the effects of alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drugs on the adolescent body. Every third Friday of the month, seventh-grade students are educated on one of the following socio-emotional topics: dangers of social media, cyberbullying, domestic violence, student relationships, coping skills, marijuana/vaping, and alcohol. The following community members are also involved with the TAME program:

  • Davidson County School Resource Officers
  • Davidson County Health Department
  • Judge Mary Covington and ADA Rob Taylor
  • Faith Community
  • Family Services of Davidson County

Progress in 2022

In 2022, Tame was implemented to Davidson County School systems in person. The Health Department was able to educate teens on two topics. One the topics being drugs which is taught by the Substance Abuse Coordinator. The second topic being vaping and marijuana which is taught by the Tobacco and Vaping Coordinator. During the 2021-2022 school year there are 8 sessions that will take place. There are 4 different sessions in a presentation day that takes about an hour each.

Progress in 2023

In 2023, the Substance Abuse Coordinator was no longer a position in Davidson County Health Department. The Tobacco and Vaping Coordinator changed to a new job title as the Public Health Planner. A new position, health educator, was added to the team which contributed to bring awareness through the TAME program. The Public Health Planner covered marijuana and vaping, while the health educator covered alcohol awareness.  Implementing new positions and topics helps bring more education to teens. This brought the success of being able to conduct a total of 7 sessions in the Davidson County School system.

Progress in 2024

In 2024, there were new staff members that filled in the Health Educator and Health Planner role. TAME was introduced to the new Health Educator as she shadowed the Health Planner during the school year. The Health Department was only able to bring awareness about marijuana and vaping, compared to the previous school year. The Health Educator was able to conducted several sessions of marijuana and vaping throughout the year.
