Description
MTW has received a SAMHSA grant entitled "Strategic Prevention Framework - Partnerships for Success". Through this grant, we are implementing 3 strategies related to mental health, underage drinking prevention, and prescription medication misuse. To address mental health, we are promoting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. This Lifeline is available nationwide for anyone facing mental health struggles, emotional distress, alcohol or drug use concerns, or just needing someone to talk to. Counselors are available 24/7 by call, text, or chat on their website. MTW health educators are promoting the 988 Lifeline via outreach materials, community presentations, posters in the school system, billboards, and WITN (news channel) advertisements. Tyrrell County has a population of around 3,000 people. According to the North Carolina 988 Performance Dashboard, there were 45 phone calls to 988 made from Tyrrell County from June 2024 to June 2025, which is a rate of 134.1 per 10,000. Through promotion of the 988 Lifeline, we would like to see this number increase over the coming years as residents realize this free service is available to them.
Progress in 2025
Tyrrell County continues to receive funding for the Partnerships for Success grant through SAMHSA. Health educators continue to seek additional avenues for promoting the 988 Lifeline. One billboard was purchased in Tyrrell County to advertise the resource. Additionally, a commercial was ran through WITN to promote the 988 Lifeline. Posters and other outreach materials are displayed in the health department and given to community partners such as the Sheriff's Office, O'Neal's Pharmacy, Tyrrell County Schools, and Department of Social Services to advertise to their clients.
