Expand Community Partnerships by working with Nonprofits, Faith-Based Groups, Local Government, and Local Businesses to move people toward stability

Logo

Description

This strategy focuses on building a broad network of support by strengthening collaboration between nonprofits, faith-based organizations, local government, and local businesses to address housing insecurity and move individuals and families toward long-term stability. Through coordinated efforts, partners can share resources, reduce service gaps, and provide wraparound support that goes beyond housing—such as employment assistance, health care connections, financial literacy, and food access.

Key actions include:

  • Align services to streamline referrals and avoid duplication.

  • Mobilize volunteers, provide emergency support, and expand outreach to underserved populations.

  • Coordinate policy, funding, and data-sharing to strengthen housing programs.

  • Encourage local employers to support workforce housing solutions and contribute resources.

Progress in 2025

In 2025, Avery County significantly expanded its community partnerships to address housing stability, largely driven by recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene. These collaborations integrate local government, non-profits, faith-based groups, and private investors to transition residents from crisis to long-term stability.

Key Multi-Sector Partnerships in 2025

  • AMY Wellness Foundation & AmeriHealth Caritas Initiative: This $10 million community investment partnership serves Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey counties. It focuses on:
    • Moving families from crisis to stability through home ownership and expanded workforce housing.
    • Integrating health services with housing support to address long-term stability.
  • Blueprint for the Blue Ridge (Chief Cares & Local Non-profits): Launched as a scalable disaster recovery model, this initiative builds new neighborhoods in Avery County.
    • It emphasizes "dignity and community" as a path to stability rather than just emergency relief.
    • The project coordinates with local businesses and donors to provide a "hand up" through sustainable housing.
  • CDBG-Neighborhood Revitalization (Local & State Government): Avery County was awarded a $5 million grant from the NC Department of Commerce in early 2026, with planning and application phases expanded throughout 2025.
    • Focus: Constructing a new Senior Center facility and improving public spaces to support long-term economic growth and stability for low-to-moderate income residents.
  • WAMY Community Action & Housing Coalition: The Avery County Community Housing Coalition works with WAMY Community Action to provide free weatherization and total family development services.
    • These services help low-income households reduce utility costs and improve home stability.
