What We Do
The purpose of the RSVP Volunteer Driver Program is to provide Story County residents with safe and reliable transportation services to and from essential services. RSVP recruits, trains, and schedules volunteer drivers to provide rides to individuals in Story County who need transportation, with priority given to residents needing rides to medical-related appointments and other essential services within Story County, primarily serving senior citizens who no longer drive. On a more limited basis, RSVP also offers out-of-county trips, (primarily the Des Moines area) for medical appointments only.
Who We Serve
Story County residents, primarily older adults but not exclusively.
How We Impact
According to the PRC Health and Quality of Life Assessment conducted in Story Co., 7% of respondents over the age of 65 indicated that lack of transportation prevented a physician visit in the past year. The RSVP Volunteer Driver Program reduces the incidence of these missed medical appointments. Having this transportation service improves access to necessary services and has a positive effect on the recipients overall sense of well-being and independence (e.g., don't worry about getting around, increased sense of independence, get out more). It also increases opportunities for socialization and connection to their community. This service is needed to help fill the gaps and supplement existing transportation services in Story County.
