What We Do
The PORT program assists victims of overdose, aiding them along the road to recovery. The team of social workers will respond to victims of overdose within a 48- to 72-hour window and offer services to the victims and their families. The PORT program also assists the family members of victims through counseling and frequent check-ups post overdose.
Who We Serve
Victims of overdose and those impacted by overdose of others.
How We Impact
Decrease the number of deaths from drug overdose within the county. Help those indivuduals struggling with addiction to get on the road to recovery.
Progress Made in 2019-2023 Cycle
The Post Overdose Response Team (PORT) pilot program was started by the Reidsville Police Department to help those who have experienced overdose and survived. As of 2021, PORT has expanded to the Eden Police Department to better serve the citizens of Rockingham County.
Progress in 2024
Compared to 2022 and 2023, the number of overdose survivors identified and referred to PORT dropped by more than 50%. This drop could be the result of fewer overdoses in the community or fewer overdoses where law enforcement or emergency services are called. The PORT team successfully made contact with 56% of the survivors identified in 2024, and 33% of those contacted enrolled in substance abuse treatment services. Both of these percentages are up from 2023.
