What Works
Effect communication with staff, partners, and youth. Building a good relationship with youth. Staff can work with youth outside of the office in safe environment in the community locations (Panera Bread) etc. Staff make clear expectations known to youth as well as support that is provided to the youth. Support is deemed as resources (mental health/connected to whatever resource that will enable the youth to grow, achieve. Great active listening.
What We Do
Assist youth with interviewing skills, resume writing, cover letter, financial literacy, job referrals, prepare for work experiences, occupational skills training, Labor Market Information (LMI) & Career Research. Additional duties to include soft skills training.
Why Is This Important?
To have youth be able to be self-sufficient with the ability to gaining and retaining employment, being able to self-sustain. Having support throughout employment to manage issues, challenges etc. Occupations lead youth to career paths and opportunities that may not be available and receive payment within those opportunities. Being able to fund the cost of training and transportation/supportive services when the youth nor his/her family can provide.
Program Summary
A summer youth employment program focused on workforce and summer job preparation and success, as well as career exploration in a virtual format. The program helps youth build essential skills for the workplace and shows them how to get where they want to go.
Target Population
High School youth and youth ages 16 to 24. Targeting the 21045 and 21044 zip codes, which includes the Oakland Mills, Long Reach, Wilde Lake and Owen Brown Villages. Recruitment will take place through community outreach and working closely with referral partners such as DJS, DSS, Grassroots, Center for Children.
Local Highlight
The ability to connect with youth. Being able to obtain GED or Diploma. Provide training that leads to employment. The one to one support from the beginning to the end and/or transition. Working with the youth to help build employment/career plan for their career path. Youth has buy-in. The buy-in is ownership and the support that comes from staff.
