Description
The VOLT Center, located near downtown New Bern, is a key resource for workforce development in Craven County, offering hands-on training in a wide range of in-demand trades. As part of Craven Community College, the VOLT Center provides cutting-edge programs that evolve to meet the growing needs of our community and equip individuals with the skills needed to succeed in today’s job market.
At the VOLT Center, students can take classes in areas like Clean Energy, Carpentry and Construction, Diesel Systems Technology, Electrical, Forklift Operation, Heavy Equipment Operations, Hospitality Careers, HVAC, Plumbing, Safety, Small Engine Repair, and Welding. These programs give students the skills they need to start working in important fields. The center also offers training for law enforcement, has a Small Business Center, and includes a community makerspace for people to work on projects and share ideas.
The building, which was originally built in 1947 as an electric plant, has been updated to create a better learning space. The center now has four expandable classrooms, a large conference room, office space, and a lab area that helps students learn by doing.
Since it opened in 2015, the VOLT Center has been developed through teamwork between Craven Community College, the City of New Bern, Craven 100 Alliance, Craven County, and several organizations like the Golden LEAF Foundation and Harold H. Bate Foundation. Together, they have created a place that helps people in Craven County learn new skills, find jobs, and build a better future.
Who we serve: Individuals interested in gaining trade skills to enhance employment opportunities from Craven and surrounding counties.
How we impact: Upon completion of trade programs individuals are more likely to secure employment. Being employed makes it more likely for individuals to afford necessary expenses such as rent/mortgage, utility bills, medical and dental, and food- all of which can lead to overall better health outcomes.
