What We Do

Manna House opened its doors on Tuesday, May 1, 1990, founded by Fr. Gerard Foley. Nineteen people came to eat the first day. By the end of May 1990, 4,512 meals had been served. And the work continues. Manna House is a place where people of all ages and walks of life receive a hot, nutritious meal served 365 days in a clean, welcoming environment. Many of the people who come to Manna House are either homeless or living on very meager earnings.

However, anyone who comes to Manna House is welcome to eat. There is no fee. No ID is required. No questions are asked. An average of 8,700 people --- men, women and children are fed each month. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2 hurricanes and ice storms we encountered, we have had some unforeseen expenses. Through it all we were able to serve all those who were in need.

With the current state of the economy people are feeling the pain of food insecurity.  As a result we have seen an increase of people in our community who are in need of a nutritious meal. As of December 31, 2023 Manna House has served 104,861 meals.  While these are difficult times the Manna House staff remain on the frontlines, continuing to provide nutritious meals to people in need in our community.  Our neighbors experiencing homelessness and those living in poverty are at risk.  They typically experience poor nutrition and hunger.  They are more susceptible to negative outcomes as a result of COVID-19 and poor nutrition can contribute to issues like fatigue and weakness.

Manna House has implemented an “Expanded Meals Program” to reach those who are experiencing increased food insecurity in our community and for those who do not have transportation to Manna

House.  The program was implemented June 21, 2021 and has one hundred-fifty (150) recipients.

Our goal is to provide a hot, nutritious meals to those in our community who are struggling with increased food insecurity 365 days a year during the noon hour.

Contributions are essential to continue our long-standing community tradition of providing nourishment to any and all who are in need. It will ensure that families have access to a healthy meal for their children at no cost, as Manna House has never charged anyone for a meal.

We believe our services make a difference in a man, woman or child going to bed hungry or eating a nutritious meal.

Quarter 4 Report Narrative

What is your program doing and what is the story behind each performance measure?

Banishing Hunger, One Neighbor at a Time - At Manna House, we believe no one should go hungry. In addition to our main location, we operate five distribution points across the city—bringing nourishment directly to those facing food insecurity who cannot reach us. Every day of the year, rain or shine, we serve with dignity, compassion, and unwavering commitment. Because hunger doesn’t take a day off, neither do we.

What is currently working in your program and what have been some accomplishments? No One Turned Away. Every Plate Filled. Every person who came seeking a meal was welcomed and fed. Not one was turned away. Thanks to the dedication of our team and the generosity you providing this grant, we met the need—fully, compassionately, and without hesitation. This is what dignity looks like. This is what community feels like. And this is why we show up—365 days a year.

What is your action plan for the next three months to get better?Sustaining Our Mission with Strength and Stewardship To continue feeding all who come to us—without exception—we are committed to maintaining ample food supply across all six of our service locations. This requires not only careful inventory management and reliable sourcing, but also proactive pursuit of additional grant funding to support our expanding reach. We are actively identifying new funding opportunities to ensure our mission endures: 365 days a year, no one goes hungry.
