Tobacco Cessation

Description

Montgomery County utilizes both state and local resources to refer community members for tobacco cessation programs. Locally people can access the FirstHealth of the Carolinas "FirstQuit" program that offers sessions led by certified tobacco treatment specialists, follow-up support sessions, quit plans and guides, and more.

At the state level, people in Montgomery County can receive referrals to QuitlineNC. QuitlineNC provides free cessation services to any North Carolina resident who needs help quitting commercial tobacco use, which includes all tobacco products offered for sale, not tobacco used for sacred and traditional ceremonies by many American Indian tribes and communities. Quit Coaching is available in different forms, which can be used separately or together, to help any tobacco user give up tobacco.

Progress in 2022-2023

During 2022 and 2023, referrals to our local FirstQuit provided by FirstHealth of the Carolinas continued to see and increase in referrals throughout the year. Local referrals to the NCQuitline are limited due to the access people have in Montgomery County to local resource programs. In 2023, the Department of Health implemented an update to the Tobacco Free Facility policy to remove the 50 foot rule for smoking and further defined prohibited smoking/tobacco products. Policy updates were distributed to community partners in effort to expand the changes municipalities made to their local policies.
