Rapid Rehousing

What We Do

Rapid Re-Housing is a solution to homelessness designed to help individuals and families to quickly exit homelessness and return to permanent housing. It is offered without preconditions (such as employment, income, absence of criminal record, or sobriety) and the resources and services provided are typically tailored to the unique needs of the household and includes three core components: housing identification, flexible financial assistance, and case management services (https://endhomelessness.org/rapid-re-housing-works/). The Community Shelter of Union County provides this program.

Who We Serve

How We Impact

Progress in 2024

Affordable housing continues to be the primary issue across all programs, with demand far exceeding supply. Due to extreme rent burdens, we see an increase in households requiring deeper subsidies or alternative housing solutions. Additionally, the tightening rental market has made it more challenging to secure units quickly, leading to more extended shelter stays and delays in housing placements. Landlord engagement is a growing challenge, as some property owners are hesitant to accept housing programs due to misconceptions or past experiences.

The increase in Rapid Rehousing referrals is not an accurate indication of increased need but rather a result of a process change. With upcoming adjustments to our coordinated entry system, we expect the number of enrolled households to decrease, again, due to a process shift rather than a decline in need. Securing affordable housing remains a major challenge due to rising rents, limited landlord participation, and low vacancy rates. Many clients face barriers such as poor credit, past evictions, and income instability, which complicate long-term housing solutions.
