What We Do
Rosedale Shelter provides an array of services that include Emergency Shelter placements for Story County youth in crisis. Youth and families can access services through our 24/7 helpline, which connects them to our trained shelter staff who provide telephonic crisis intervention, support, referral information and can assess the need for an Emergency Shelter placement. Once the need for shelter placement has been identified, youth can be admitted to the shelter for placement services. Qualified staff provide 24/7 client supervision at a minimum staff/client ratio of 1 to 5, facilitate transportation of the youth to their home school and to other necessary medical/therapy appointments, engage the youth in recreation activities, facilitate basic living skills & education groups, provide nutritious meals and snacks, and work towards family reunification with their parent(s)/guardian(s) through family mediation sessions and crisis/safety planning. When the parent(s)/guardian(s) home is not an option for the youth to return, our staff begin transition planning with referral sources and/or other professionals and family supports to assist with assessing another appropriate out of home level of care.
Who We Serve
Rosedale Shelter provides 24/7 emergency shelter placements and crisis intervention/mediation services to male/females ages 12 through 17 years. Youth can be referred by The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Juvenile Court Services (JCS) Officers, Law Enforcement, parents (for families who reside in Story County), and also through self-referrals. If Rosedale Shelter has bed capacity to serve youth, the referrals are not denied at the time of referral if they meet our age eligibility requirements (12 through 17) and the appropriate gender bed is available. If bed capacity is full, Rosedale Shelter staff assist with locating other shelter facilities and services that may be appropriate for the youth.
How We Impact
If a crisis intervention caller cannot be diverted from a shelter placement, the youth may be accepted (based on age/gender eligibility and bed availability) for Rosedale Shelter placement. Rosedale Shelter staff provides a safe, structured, and nurturing environment to allow parent/guardians time to connect with other YSS resources and/or additional community supports, make arrangements for long-term assistance with family or other supports, and have a structured timeout from each other to allow for a safe, calm, and collaborative and solution-focused family mediation. After the youth and family have had the opportunity to de-escalate from the crisis, the mediation session is scheduled with the youth, family, and Rosedale Shelter staff. This mediation assists families with creating safety plans, making longer-term goals, and develop creative solutions to support family reunification within the home when applicable and safe. If the youth is presenting challenges that the family cannot support and/or address within the home setting, Rosedale Shelter staff assist the family with potential longer-term shelter placement & other support services through HHS involvement. This involves ongoing assessment of the youth and family safety, as well as the potential need for a higher level of out of home care/treatment for the youth.
