Children are Successful in School (Howard) (formerly School Success)

Story Behind the Curve

Results of the state's first annual PARCC assessments for Grades 3-8 show Howard County public school students contininug to perform at levels that signifincantly outpace thier peers across maryaland. PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) is the first assessment aligned to Maryland's college and career ready standards and although Howard County students gernally outperform thier statewide peers, there are some subsets of students that are less sucecessful resulting in lower than expected scores. Because this is baseline data, we will be looking for trends in the sub-populations to identify the specific causes of the lower test scores. Targeted intervention can then be developed to reach these students and provide the extra level of support they need to reach their full potential.

Strategies to improve these indicators

Why Is This Important?

In general, Howard County's test scores are at or above State levels for all three grades. There are, however schools that do not show high percentage of proficient or advanced levels on these tests. There are students that need the additional level of academic intervention or the support of a consistent adult role model in their lives to be successful. Students who are successful in school are better prepared to enter the workforce or continue their academic careers. These children are also at a reduced risk for later substance abuse or violent behaviors. children who are successful in school have more opportunities and more likely to be successful later in life. Providing a collaborative community based effort to address bullying and harassment will also promote school success.
