Why Is This Important?
St Helier is home to over a third of Jersey's population - including nearly one in three children.
Making the best possible use of the capacity in St Helier, as well as other existing built-up areas, to accommodate new development, is key to protecting the unique beauty and biodiversity of Jersey's natural environment. It also presents a pivotal opportunity to make a difference for Town residents, and drive a fundamental shift in perceptions and experience of urban living.
This indicator helps explore the fundamental question - does regeneration of St Helier improve satisfaction with Town as a place to live amongst its residents? The look and feel of Town won't change quickly, but the indicator provides a benchmark against which progress can be measured over time. It should also provide analysis of what shapes perceptions, and the impact of other indicators, such as community safety, and satisfaction with housing, cultural and sporting facilities, and neighbourhoods.
