Description
Increased physical activity is associated with lower risks of type 2 diabetes, cancer, stroke, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and premature mortality, independent of obesity. The role of the built environment is important for encouraging physical activity. Individuals who live closer to sidewalks, parks, and gyms are more likely to exercise. Food insecurity is associated with chronic health problems in adults including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and mental health issues including major depression.
Alamance County has gained two new playgrounds over the past couple of years. Burlington City park replaced an old playground with a new inclusive one in 2023, the first of the Burlington parks system. Cedarock park also gained a new and improved playground in 2024 with inclusive activities.
