PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) for HIV Prevention

Description

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a medication that can be taken to prevent someone from getting HIV. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV, reducing the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%. There are several ways to obtain PrEP medication in Guilford County including through the ITTS program. The GCDPH PrEP coordinator can assist individuals in being linked with a PrEP provider on-site or at other provider locations by contacting the Sexual Health Action Group at SHAG@guilfordcountync.gov. Tele-PrEP is currently being offered at Triad Health Project through their partnership with QCare+, which offers a quick, low-cost, digital alternative for all North Carolina residents.

Progress in 2024

One of the Guilford County outreach organizations forged a partnership with Qcare Plus expanding telehealth services for PrEP and DoxyPEP. This partnership expands access to the entire state of North Carolina with a focus on Guilford County. Individuals seeking PrEP can get their medication covered with or without insurance and prescribed through a simple telehealth model that ships test kits and medication directly to their home.

Guilford County Division of Public Health (GCDPH) holds an in-house PrEP clinic for clients screened at the health department clinics or in outreach. In 2024, the GCDPH clinic began a DoxyPEP pilot program that offered doxycycline to PrEP clients for the prevention of STIs other than HIV.
