QuitSmart was created by Dr. Robert Shipley, founder of the Duke Stop Smoking Clinic. It is available as a Stop Smoking Kit and through QuitSmart as a Stop Smoking Classes.

The Quit Smart program provides effective coping techniques and new ways to use smoking medicines like nicotine patches, gum, and lozenge.

Throughout the program an individual will learn how to:

• Use a simple brand-switching procedure to ease off nicotine. 
• Use stop-smoking medicines like the nicotine skin patch to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms.
• Change your thoughts to make quitting easier.
• See yourself as a comfortable nonsmoker rather than as a smoker who is deprived of cigarettes.
• Use hypnosis to relax and focus on success.
• Avoid tobacco temptations and come-ons.
• Use the QuitSmart fake cigarette to cope with your hand-to-mouth smoking habit.
• Get the right kind of support from family and friends.
• Control your weight.
• Add pleasures to offset the loss of tobacco.

In various studies , QuitSmart has shown to be the most effective quiting methods against four other methods listed below. In a study involving five U.S. Air Force bases, 66% of QuitSmart participants were still tobacco-free six months after their quit date.

The Anson County Health Department provides the QuitSmart program throughout the year on a needed basis. Participants call to receive assistance when they are willing and ready. They are then scheduled for a one-to-one meeting to discuss the QuitSmart program and a quitting method that suits them best. 

The program is evaluated by the number of participants who complete and utilize the methods in the program provided through the Anson County Health Department.

QuitSmart was not active in 2023.

During 2023, Quitline NC was being promoted and advertised by the Anson County Health Department. During various community events, information and educational resources were offered to residents and family members about smoking cessation. Anson County Health Department attended the Anson Mobile Market monthly to distribute smoking cessation materials including Quitline materials.

Referrals can be made and faxed from the Health Department office as well for interested residents.

During the year 2023, Quitline materials have reached over 1,880 individuals and more than 743 households.
