CATCH MY BREATH

Description

CATCH My Breath developed by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health, is a is a peer-reviewed, evidence-based youth vaping prevention program. The program provides current facts and data to teachers, parents, and health professionals to provide students with the education and skills they need to make knowledgeable decisions about the use of e-cigarettes, including JUUL devices. CATCH My Breath utilizes a peer-led teaching technique and meets National and State Health Education Standards.

The evidence-based program was shown to significantly reduce students’ likelihood of vaping in the year following program implementation. Students also showed a significant increase in knowledge of the dangers of vaping and an increase in positive perceptions about choosing a vape-free lifestyle.

The program is offered to students and teachers in Anson County throughout the year. Grade-levels are combined in two day sessions to complete the program by a certified CATCH instructor. Teachers are also provided an option to become certified in CATCH to teach the evidence-based program.

The program is evaluated by the number of schools, students, and teachers who are provided with the evidence-base programs throughout Anson County.

Progress in 2023

The CATCH Program is currently paused due to not having a full-time health educator. Interviews have been held but there has been no success in recruiting a potential candidate. Once a health educator is procured, we plan to start the CATCH Program back with the schools.
