Story Behind the Curve

Students in grades 3-8 are assessed to demonstrate their knowledge of reading and math. The test produces a score that describes how well a student mastered the math content specified in the Maryland College and Career Standards. Each child receives a score in each content area that categorizes his/her performance in one of five (5) performance levels.

  • Performance Level 1: Did not yet meet expectation;
  • Performance Level 2: Partially met expectations;
  • Performance Level 3: Approached expectations;
  • Performance Level 4: Met expectations; or
  • Performance Level 5: Exceeded expectations.

This data provides parents, caregivers, teachers, and school administrators with objective information on how each student is progressing academically.

What Works

In 2014-15, Maryland fully implemented the new PARCC assessments, which are aligned to new standards and serve as a reset for the State’s accountability system. In 2017, the third year of implementation, students showed significant improvement in both reading and math. Statewide, Maryland students were at 33.2% Mathematics of students scored at Performance Level 4 or 5.

Achievement information for schools, school systems, and the State is published in the annual Maryland Report Card. This report provides information for each public school and local school system, showing the school/system’s performance and progress.
