Story Behind the Curve

The percent of parents establishing child interaction practices such as talking, reading and playing with their child as part of their daily routine has increased from 71% in 2023 to 95% in 2025. With this percent being in the 95-98% range over the last two years, it speaks to our community partners ability to emphasize the importance of TalkReadPlay to their families.

*Year-to-year variation in results should be interpreted with caution, as the survey was administered by different partner locations across years.

Contributing Factors:

  • Trusted messenger training.
  • Robust program implementation and promotion.
  • Parent Education.

Limiting Factors:

  • Staff Turnover.
  • Lack of flexibility for parents to attend TalkReadPlay programming.

Why Is This Important?

Empowering caregivers* to be their child’s first and most important teacher helps create strong, positive and nurturing relationships. 90% of brain development happens in the first 5 years of life. Caring, responsive interactions between children and the adults in their lives are the building blocks for early brain development.

TalkReadPlay (TRP) is a community movement designed  to strengthen families by promoting Early Relational Health, or the emotional wellbeing that grows from the positive connection between children and their caregivers.

*The Foundation uses the shorthand term caregivers to refer to any individual who may be involved in raising a child.
