Story Behind the Curve
Resident deaths is a raw count of deaths due to all causes per year. This can be impacted by age distribution, like aging baby boomers, and overall population growth. The rate increases starting in 2015 are largely attributable to the impacts of the opioid epidemic. The large increases in 2020, 2021, and 2022 were due to COVID-19 associated deaths linked to the pandemic.
