Additional Data to Consider
To calculate total family income, the incomes of all related family members that live together are added up to determine poverty status. If an individual or group of individuals (such as housemates) are not living with family members, their own individual income is compared with their individual poverty threshold. If this amount is less than the poverty threshold amount determined by the factors in the graph above, that family is considered to be in poverty. If the amount is equal to or greater than the poverty threshold determined by the factors in the table above, the family is not considered to be in poverty.

Story Behind the Curve
To determine poverty levels, the U.S. Census Bureau uses a family's size and age of family members to determin the household's money income threshold. If a family's total income is less than the family's money income threshold, then that family and each individual in it are considered to be living in poverty.
