Story Behind the Curve

In late 2021, it became apparent that families in the community were suffering from grief after losing loved ones to overdose. Grief support groups began in February 2022 continues to meet monthly. There was a dip in the number of support groups offered in the latter half of 2023 and into 2024 due to competing priorities for our Certified Peer Support Specialists (CPSSs). Additionally, in Spring 2025, the HCHD's Substance Awareness Program lost two of its three CPSSs, and all forms of group peer support essentially ceased.

What Works

The grief support groups provided in Hyde County provide a safe place to talk about the loss of a loved one and fosters healing through informal sharing and connecting with others who are also on a journey of healing. While overdose spurred the creation of this grief support group, its members are not limited to those who have lost a loved one to overdose.

Action Plan

The Hyde County Substance Awareness Program aims to continue providing weekly grief support groups in Hyde County in 2024 in order to address the needs of those struggling with the loss of a loved one.
