Story Behind the Curve
In 2019, more than 100 homicides occurred in Charlotte — an 80% increase over the previous year and the city's highest number of homicides since the early 1990s. Hospital emergency departments treated more than 4,000 Mecklenburg County residents for assault-related injuries. In response to the increase in violence, the city, county and partners adopted a public health approach to prevent violent crime through community interventions.

What Works
Alternatives to Violence (ATV) mediates conflict and prevents violent retaliation. Additionally, we engage the community in events and public education designed to change cultural norms.
ATV provides individualized interventions and social determinants support for individuals ages 14-25 identified as most at risk to experience community violence executed at the following sites: Nations Ford/Arrowood, Beatties Ford, and West Boulevard.
