Definition
Why Is This Important?
Transportation is currently one of the largest uses of energy in the state. Vehicle miles traveled refers to the total number of miles traveled by all vehicles in the region, which is estimated by VTrans each year. The more miles driven by vehicles on the road, the more energy is consumed.
Reducing the share of Single Occupancy Vehicle trips reduces Vehicle Miles Traveled, which means less energy used. Promoting public transit, walking, and biking are ways to reduce VMT. Using smart growth principles for new development also reduces the distance that people have to travel to access services.
