Why Is This Important?
Legislation known as Act 148 (the Universal Recycling law) was passed in 2012 to reduce the amount of waste going to landfills by banning recyclables, food scraps and yard or leaf debris from landfills. Amendments to the law in 2018 established a new framework for waste fees, leaf and yard waste and food waste. Changes to the law in 2019 prohibited retailers and food establishments from providing customers with single-use plastic bags, straws, stirrers, or polystyrene containers.
