Story Behind the Curve

The percent of North Carolina's population aged 16 and older who are unemployed but seeking work has steadily decreased from 10.5% in 2014 to 4.8% in 2023.

NC (American Indian/Alaskan Nativepercent of population aged 16 and older who are unemployed but seeking work decreased from 13.6% in 2014 to 6.1% in 2023.

NC (Asianpercent of population aged 16 and older who are unemployed but seeking work decreased overall from 7.0% in 2014 to 4.0% in 2023.  However, the percentage has fluctuated between 3.9% and 4.0% since 2019.

NC (Hispanicpercent of population aged 16 and older who are unemployed but seeking work decreased from 10.6% in 2014 to 5.0% in 2023.

NC (Black) percent of population aged 16 and older who are unemployed but seeking work decreased from 16.8% in 2014 to 7.6% in 2023.

NC (Native Hawaiian/PIpercent of population aged 16 and older who are unemployed but seeking work decreased overall from 12.5% in 2014 to 7.3% in 2023. However, the percentage has fluctuated between 7.1 % and 8.8 % since 2018.

NC (Whitepercent of population aged 16 and older who are unemployed but seeking work decreased from 8.7% in 2014 to 3.9% in 2023.

This indicator (Unemployment (Total): Percent of Population in NC Aged 16 and Older Who Are Unemployed But Seeking Work) is aligned with HNC2030.

  1. The ACS  (Table #S2301)*
  2. The US Labor Department (https://www.bls.gov/data/)

*HNC2030 uses the ACS

  • State level data - available as annual data
  • County level data - available as five-year rolling estimate (some larger jurisdictions may have annual data)
