Current Value

22.1

2023

Definition

This indicator reports the crude and age adjusted rate of deaths due to suicide per 100,000 among North Carolina residents. Deaths by suicide are defined as having ICD–10 underlying cause-of-death codes X60–X84 or Y870.

Story Behind the Curve

The suicide death rate in our community remains higher than state and national averages, and recent data indicate an upward trend. This concerning pattern reflects a complex interplay of social, economic, and behavioral health factors. Contributing drivers include limited access to mental health care, stigma surrounding mental illness, poverty, and high rates of substance use. Additionally, barriers such as transportation, provider shortages, and lack of crisis services further exacerbate the problem.
