About the Data
Overall Maternal Vulnerability Index Score in 2024 (MVI). The Maternal Vulnerability Index (MVI) ranks geographies on overall vulnerability to poor pregnancy outcomes and vulnerability across six themes.The Reproductive Healthcare Theme measures access to family planning and reproductive services including abortion, as well as the availability of skilled attendance.
The Physical Health Theme includes prevalence of noncommunical diseases and sexual transmitted infections.
The Mental Health and Substance Abuse Theme includes factors related to stress, mental illness, and addiction.
The General Healthcare Theme includes accessibility, affordability and utilization of healthcare, including insurance coverage and the state's Medicaid expansion status.
The Socioeconomic Determinants Theme includes educational attainment, poverty, food insecurity, and social support.
The Physical Environment Theme focuses on environmental factors that influence maternal health outcomes include violent crime rates, housing conditions, pollution, and access to transportation.
All indicators have been normalized to be 0-100 where 0 = the least vulnerable and 100 = the most vulnerable. A higher score indicates greater vulnerability to adverse maternal outcomes.
