Other considerations and activities highlighted by the CSP staff include:
- Housing is affected by local housing market
- Current rental availability very low and affected by local trends
- Section 8 requirements
- Staff support recertification paperwork to be sure clients stay ontop of burocracy of section 8
- Case managers work with building managers
- Case managers also work with appeal section 8 decisions and other housing agency decisions
- Case managers work with staff to find funds for furnishings and to support clients owning their own homes
- CSP staff are payees so that landlords are paid on time; utilities are paid
- We help moving people and insure that accommodations are reasonable (e.g., safe, bannisters, shower bars, etc.)
- Coordinating with VNA and other agencies to ensure people can be as independent as long as possible (working with aids; housekeeping service
- Helping people search, talk on phones, and find housing/apartments
- Provide access to the internet (may not have the skill to use it)
- Provide affordable housing list each month (forwards it)
- Helping folks build credit so that they can get an apartment
Other comments:
- Estimate about housing is likely much higher (more likely 3 - 4 % are homeless)
- Extensive time is put into finding homeless people find temporary housing -- massively time consuming and exhausting. Some clients have difficult relationships and histories; system is very challenging
- There is a large variety of housing situations and we work to find a situation that will fit the person's needs
Our clients face more rules than the general population
- Application process (BHA) can take a ton of time, CM provide consistency and support to be sure applications are completed
- Much of the housing is considered substandard -- there is large variability in housing that is available
- Have to help people get basic identification (birth certificates, SS card, etc.)-- navigating systems that issue these ID
