The hospitalisation rate was identified as an important indicator to show how well Māori are thriving. The group agreed that the hospitalisation rate was improving but not to an acceptable level.
There are a number of factors thought to affect the hospitalisation rate. These include:
- Low income
- Unhealthy homes
- Homelessness
- Lack of education
- Access to Primary Health care
- Access to medication
- Awareness - around smoking and drinking
