The rate of unemployment can serve as an indicator of how well families and individuals are managing their own circumstances. High unemployment rates often mean a dependency on benefits and welfare to get by.
The data values reported form the baseline for this indicator and are sourced from www.stats.govt.nz The data is for the whole of Otara Papatoetoe Local Board area and not contained to Otara only

What's helping to reduce the reported level of unemployment for Otarians
- more local businesses
- people creating own $ opps
- 'gentrification' - more people coming into the area who are employed and more financial, include home owner
- people not recognised as being unemployed, or not registered unemployed
- increase in students off the unemployment register
What's not helping to reduce the reported level of unemployment for Otarians
- increasing young population with low/nil skill or qualifications
- redefined social welfare categories
- people unable to work due to ill health
- local South Auckland businessman not actively recruiting Otarians
- lack of pastoral care to support students complete tertiary/trade qualifications
- introduction of casualisation/zero hours etc changes to employment - shift away from full time employment to informal employment
