WIC mothers are strongly encouraged to breastfeed their infants unless there is a medical reason not to. All WIC staff are trained to promote breastfeeding and provide the necessary support new breastfeeding mothers and infants need for success. In addition, WIC provides breastfeeding peer counselors and breastfeeding education classes to help support pregnant and new mothers.  

WIC has established an aggressive target for 75% of infants be be breastfed.  MCHD is working to improve breastfeeding rates not only among WIC clients, but through the community at large.
