Story Behind the Curve
The Opioid Epidemic hit Ohio very hard, and Licking County was no exception. From 2000 to 2017, Ohio’s death rate due to unintentional drug poisonings increased 1,081 percent, and the increase in deaths has been driven largely by opioid-related overdoses.
A drop in deaths in 2016 was, in part, attributed to the distribution of free Naloxone (Project Dawn) kits in the community. An increase in illicit fentanyl has continued to drive an increase in Licking County's unintentional overdose deaths in 2017 and 2018.
What We Do
LCHD's Drug Overdose Prevention program provides drug abuse prevention education, proper medication disposal information and events, Naloxone distribution, and Overdose Fatality Reviews.
