Story Behind the Curve
Seat belt use is the most effective way to reduce the risk of death and serious injury of occupants in motor vehicle traffic collisions. Motor vehicle-related injuries kill more children and young adults than any other single cause in the United States. More than 41,000 people in the US die in motor vehicle traffic collisions per year, and collision injuries result in about 500,000 hospitalizations and four million emergency department visits annually. It is estimated that seat belts reduce serious crash related injuries and deaths by about half.
This indicator shows the percentage of adults who always or nearly always wear a seatbelt while riding in or driving a car.
