Voter registration in Jersey is active; a person needs to apply for inclusion on the electoral register in order to exercise the right to vote. The right to vote is granted to persons who are aged 16 years or older, have been an ordinarily resident for at least two years prior to election day or have been an ordinarily resident for the last six months plus any other period(s) which total five years, regardless of their nationality.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Mission that observed the 2018 general election in Jersey estimated that about 76% of the eligible population were registered to vote in that election, but they also noted that only about half of the population in St Helier were registered as compared to the Island’s rural parishes, where up to 80% of the population were registered to vote.
