About the Indicator

Volunteer opportunities, particularly those offering intergenerational engagement, can provide a powerful sense of purpose and connection. Older adults, especially if paid work and caregiving responsibilities become lighter, may choose to devote time and energy to their communities – for example serving at food banks, as tutors to young children, and as poll workers.

This indicator measures the proportion of older adults in California who volunteered to organize or lead efforts to solve problems in their community in the past year, as self-reported on the California Health Interview Survey.
