This metric reflects the number of unemployed people per 1,000 in the labor force for calendar years 2018 through 2023.  Prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the unemployment rate continued to decrease coming out of the last recession.  During 2020, the rate more than doubled to 5.6% due to the impacts from layoffs caused by the pandemic disruptions to the State’s economy lasting well into calendar year 2021. In calendar year 2023, the unemployment rate was less than pre-pandemic levels. It’s important to note that the unemployment rate is derived from a household survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau and asks respondents if they are 1) able and available to accept work if offered, and 2) actively looking for work in the last four weeks. It is possible that the unemployment rate presented for 2020 does not accurately reflect the number of dislocated workers who were temporarily laid off.
