Story Behind the Curve

The consistent percent of bridges in structurally deficient condition indicate that VTrans remains capable of repairing bridges as quickly as they degrade into deficient quality. While this number is holding level it is a good sign that they are not moving to deficient condition faster than we are replacing them.

Benchmarks

We are tracking this against the Percentages in the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Transportation Asset Management Plan (TAMP).

Notes on Methodology

Annual inventory and inspections by VTrans of bridges with spans > 20 ft on state and town highways, and short structures with spans between 6 and 20 ft on the state highway system. Data is prepared for submission to FHWA. Structurally deficient bridges has been replaced by poor condition by deck area. This change came from the FHWA and occurred before the  2022  data. All data from 2022 and on reflects the new methodology from the FHWA of poor condition by deck area.
