In 2019, EMS administered Narcan to reverse drug overdose 91 times. In 2020, EMS administered Narcan to reverse drug overdose 147 times in Scotland County. Our Laurinburg Police Department administered Narcan 12 times and our Sheriff’s Department administered Narcan 10 times. In 2021, EMS administered Narcan to reverse drug overdose 195 times and dispatched to 197 overdose calls; In 2022, EMS was dispatched to 217 overdose calls and Narcan was administered 184 times. The data for number of deaths associated with drug overdose for 2021 and 2011 was not available at time of this report.

In 2019, 12.3% of the CHNA Survey respondents reported that alcohol/substance abuse was the biggest behavior risk factor that impacts their family in Scotland County.  These numbers show Scotland County is in need of strategies and interventions to decrease the number of drug overdose and deaths due to overdose and is one of the county’s top priorities for public health.
