Story Behind the Curve
This indicator reports the percentage of the population aged 5 and older who speak a language other than English at home and speak English less than "very well". This indicator is relevant because an inability to speak English well creates barriers to healthcare access, provider communications, and health literacy/education. Of the 28,594 total population aged 5 and older in the report area, 587 or 2.05% have limited English proficiency. While this percentage is lower than the state average, the numbers of people and location relative to resources are of note. In the more urban areas of the state, it can be easier to access materials that are translated into Spanish, as well as to have the assistance of well trained interpretors.
