Why Does this Matter?

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) attacks the body's immune system, and makes it difficult to fight off infection. If left untreated then a person can develop Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndroms (AIDS) which can be devestating to a person's livelihood. By identifing as many cases as possible, infections can be managed, AIDS can be avoided, and transmission can be reduced.

Who is Affected?
Data shows that HIV disproportionality affects some populations compared to others. We see the biggest descrepancies in men who have sex with men as well as black and hispanic/latino populations. We see these trends nationally and in Indiana dues to sexual risk factors, and lower access to care and education.

Goals

At the Indiana department of health we have identified 5 main goals to end the HIV epidemic. Since 2015, Indiana prevalance has risen about 2.5 HIV/ AIDS cases per 100,000 people annually, and 182 HIV/ AIDS cases per 100,000 people has been identified as the target prevalance by 2026. This will be a decrease of about 2 cases per 100,000 people annually until 2026 which is decreasing slightly less than the increase since 2015.

  1. Diagnose all people with HIV early
  2. Teat infections quickly and effectively
  3. prevent new infections using proven interventions
  4. identify potential outbreaks and respond quickly, collaboratively, and effectively
  5. Build capacity to strengthen and sustain the work
