Story Behind the Curve
Unresolved mental health distress can lead to suicide. According to the North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics, the suicide rate in Rowan County is higher than its peer counties and the State, reaching 20.1 deaths attributed to self-harm per 100,000 population in 2018. Although the suicide rate has been decreasing, and was last measured at 17.9 in 2019, it is higher than the Healthy NC 2030 goal of 11.1 deaths per 100,000 population.
