Story Behind the Curve
The Onslow Overdose Emergency Department visit rate declined in 2025 and is the lowest rate since 2017. Possible reasons behind this decline includes an increase in Narcan accessibility and availability within the community leading to a decreased number of EMS transports to Onslow Memorial Hospital; increased awareness and availability of treatment and recovery services leading to decreased illicit drug use; increased efforts to promote Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) within the Onslow County Jail and Onslow County Community Paramedic Programs; and, efforts by the County to increase treatment beds through the use of Opioid Settlement Funds reducing barriers to care.
