Story Behind the Curve
The average improvement across the the all domains in SFY 2019 was 37.6%, which decreased to 33% in SFY 2020, which matches the trend above, suggesting that the SFY2020 school year may have been more challenging for youth served through Success Beyond Six programs. This is not surprising given that the time two measurement would have occurred just after the global pandemic response began. For SFYs 2022 and 2023, the SB6 programs were reporting that more students were needing support and students were demonstrating more acute mental health needs and behaviors. Population-level data for Vermont has shown increasing trends of child and youth depression and anxiety, decreases in child/youth resilience, and increases in missed school days.

Notes on Methodology
'Behavioral and/or Emotional Needs’ is one of five domains of the of the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths tool. There are ten items within this domain that may be identified as an area of need of an individual: Psychosis, Attention Deficit/Impulse Control/Hyperactivity, Depression, Anxiety, Oppositional, Conduct, Adjustment to Trauma, Anger Control, Substance Use, and Eating Disturbance.
This measure is calculated by averaging improvement of all ten items within this domain. Improvement is measured by comparing the same individual at time one (the beginning of the school year) and time two (the end of the school year). To be identified as having a measured need on that item, the youth must have a rating at time one of 'moderate' or 'severe'. Other domains not included here are: Life Functioning, Child Strengths, Caregiver Needs & Strengths, and Child Risk Behaviors.
