Since 2009, drug overdose deaths within Wake County have steadily increased. 2021 saw the largest number of deaths reported at 20 individuals per 100,000 residents (240 deaths total) in Wake County. The rate of overdoses deaths in Wake County decreased in 2022 to 19.7 per 100,000 residents, however since the population in Wake County increased that year, the total number of deaths was 241, which was actually slightly higher than the number of overdose deaths within the previous year.
